Career Preparation

Career Preparation can be accomplished through classroom experiences, work-based learning experiences, and/or career training during or after high school. Career preparation includes using resources to help develop your education and training plans, and enhancing your employability skills.

Finding Your Path

Use the Michigan Career Pathfinder to create your custom roadmap by exploring careers, schools, and programs in Michigan. This online career planning tool connects Michigan residents with high-quality, in-demand degrees and credentials. Most Genesee County K-12 school districts use Xello, a career readiness program, to complete an educational development plan. Students document their journey as they build self-knowledge, explore post-secondary options, create plans, and continually reassess their goals as they take in new career knowledge, skills, and experiences.

The Genesee Career Institute (GCI) provides instruction and experiential learning in many career areas that help prepare Genesee County students for immediate entry into the workforce. GCI also offers excellent opportunities for students to gain advanced exposure to knowledge and skillsets in preparation for moving on to post-secondary education in their chosen field, and can even lead to college credit for courses taken at GCI.

If your pathway includes college, check out the College Planning area of the Beyond Graduation website.

The Genesee Intermediate School District strives to provide students with hands-on learning opportunities while they are in high school through Work-Based Learning experiences. Students can earn high school credit while being paid to obtain real-world experiences in diverse industries. Job shadow opportunities are also available for students seeking a glimpse into a career or industry.

Gaining Employability Skills

In addition to having knowledge and credentials, being prepared to apply and interview for jobs is an important part of career preparation.

GST Michigan Works! and the Flint & Genesee Group provide resources and workshops to help you develop soft skills, learn how to dress for an interview, and develop resumes and cover letters. The Flint & Genesee Group also offers after school enrichment and summer programs that help youth gain skills and experiences that help them to be career and college ready.
